THE GALLANT OLD BATTLESHIP TEXAS, AT THE SAN JACINTO BATTLEFIELD, HOUSTON, TEXAS 40 --- HOUSTON, TEXAS The gallant old Battleship Texas, is shown here at her final resting place at the San Jacinto Battlefield, 18 miles southeast of Houston, Texas, where Texas won its independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836. Once the Navy's Queen of Battle, the U. S. S. Texas, after valiant service in two World Wars, is now permanently moored in a slip beside the Houston Ship Channel in the shadow of the stately 570-foot tall San Jacinto Monument.
