Beartooth Lake and Beartooth Butte, Wyoming, circa 1934

About this postcard

Beartooth Lake lies beneath Beartooth Butte, a flat-topped mass of reddish sedimentary rock in the Beartooth Mountains of northwestern Wyoming. The card presents the pair as a scenic stop on the Red Lodge to Cooke City highway, the route promoted as the northeast entrance approach to Yellowstone National Park through Red Lodge, Cooke City, and Silver Gate. That road, completed in 1936, gave motorists from the Billings direction a high, direct mountain crossing into Yellowstone and quickly became a sightseeing route in its own right. Sanborn Souvenir Co. of Denver, a prolific publisher of western view cards, issued the image for the tourist trade the new highway brought through the region.
