About this postcard

A waving American flag on a pole is printed in red, white and blue above the title "Behold the Flag" and a patriotic verse praising the flag as a symbol of justice and human brotherhood floating "over the eternal capital of the eternal Republic." The card was copyrighted in 1917 by Ignatius I. Murphy of Topeka, Kansas, dating it to the year the United States entered World War I, when such flag-themed patriotic cards were widely circulated. The verse's reference to the "eternal capital" points to Washington, D.C., though no city is pictured.
