A tall stone obelisk rises at the end of a tree-lined path: the Bennington Battle Monument in Bennington, Vermont. The monument commemorates the August 1777 Battle of Bennington, though the fighting took place a few miles west in what is now New York. Completed in 1891, the shaft stands about 306 feet high and remains the tallest structure in Vermont. The sender had been in Bennington the day before and sent the card along as a small souvenir.
