The Bennington Battle Monument stands on its hilltop in Bennington, Vermont, a tapered stone shaft rising more than 300 feet above the surrounding town. The sender of the card gives its height as 308 feet and calls it the highest battle monument in the world, noting that the top offers a wide panorama of the hills of New York and Vermont on every side. The monument, finished in 1891, commemorates the August 1777 battle that helped end Burgoyne's campaign down the Hudson. The fighting itself took place several miles west, in the town of Hoosick, New York, while the hill under the monument held the Continental storehouse that Burgoyne's expedition was sent to capture.
