Big Tree near Daytona, Florida, circa 1905

About this postcard

A huge live oak draped in long veils of Spanish moss fills the frame, with a wooden stairway and railed observation platform built up around its trunk so visitors could climb into the branches. The card names it the "Big Tree near Daytona, largest in Florida," giving its girth as 35 feet. Such moss-hung oaks were standard tourist attractions in early twentieth-century Florida, and the stair-and-platform arrangement was typical of the roadside "big tree" sites that drew travelers along the state's new railroads and highways.
