A huge live oak draped in long veils of Spanish moss fills the frame, with a wooden stairway and railed platform built against its trunk so visitors could climb into the branches; the printed caption identifies it as the "Big Tree near Daytona, largest in Florida," with a circumference of 35 feet. Live oaks (Quercus virginiana) hung with Spanish moss are the signature trees of the Florida sandhills and hammocks, and oversized specimens like this one were promoted as roadside attractions in the early automobile era. The stair-and-platform structure was a common way for turn-of-the-century tourists to view such trees up close.
White border around the image; handwritten message on the front (top margin and right side); small red circular stamp mark at lower right; slight edge wear.
Postmark: SEABREEZE FLA MAR 11 3PM 1906. Undivided back with printed "THIS SIDE FOR THE ADDRESS."; 1¢ green Franklin stamp; light soiling and edge wear.
