About this postcard

An elevated view looks down on Marietta, Ohio, where the Muskingum River meets the Ohio. Two bridges cross the water, and commercial blocks, factories, and houses spread across the flats below wooded hills. Marietta was founded in 1788 as the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory, and by the early 1900s it remained a river town shaped by traffic on the Ohio and Muskingum. The scene shows that mix of riverfront industry, downtown commerce, and residential streets set against the surrounding hills.
