Bird's Eye View of Whitman, Mass., circa 1908

About this postcard

An elevated view looks down over Whitman, Massachusetts, with a broad unpaved street running through the center, lined with houses and commercial blocks. A large brick factory complex and its tall tower dominate the middle ground, with wooded hills and scattered houses rising behind the town. Whitman was a shoe-manufacturing center in the early 1900s, and the scale of the brick works in the view reflects that industrial role. The mix of homes, commercial blocks, and factory buildings shows a compact New England town tied to local manufacturing.
