Birthday postcard with embroidered carnations, Brooklyn, NY, 1918

Card type
Novelty

About this postcard

The design centers on an oval gold-embossed frame enclosing a fabric panel with three red carnations worked in embroidery or applique. Printed sprays of blue forget-me-nots flank the oval, and a small diamond inset shows a cottage in a meadow. Below, the verse reads 'A Happy Birthday' and 'Sunshine passes, shadows fall, my remembrance outlasts all.' The senders, Aloysius and Mary Gross, wrote that they were sorry not to be with the recipient that day. The card was mailed from Brooklyn in August 1918, near the end of the First World War. Embroidered floral panels were a familiar novelty in early-20th-century greeting postcards.
