A large white clapboard house with a rooftop lookout or cupola, seen from the street behind a wooden fence, with neighboring frame houses, chimneys and shade trees. The caption identifies it as the birthplace of Maria Mitchell, the Nantucket astronomer and educator (1818-1889) who became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a professor at Vassar College; the house is dated on the card to 1790. The building stands on Vestal Street and is preserved as the Maria Mitchell Association's birthplace museum.

Certainly a quaint old
place and quite a fashion-
able resort. Spent the week
end at Spofford Lake.
