Black family at cabin, 'De ole Folks at Home,' Atlanta, GA, 1908

About this postcard

Nine African American adults and children, one holding a small white dog, are posed in front of and in the window of a weathered, unpainted clapboard cabin raised on short posts. A large iron wash pot sits in the foreground. The printed caption, 'De ole Folks at Home,' belongs to the dialect genre of old plantation imagery sold widely in the early 20th century. Such cards presented a sentimental, stereotyped view of Southern Black rural life, not a documentary record of the people shown.
