Blue Springs, Mammoth Terraces, Yellowstone National Park, circa 1940

About this postcard

The card shows the Blue Springs of the Mammoth Terraces in Yellowstone National Park: terraced basins of pale blue and turquoise water held by low, scalloped rims stained pink, orange and rust, with green hills and a distant snow-streaked mountain range behind. Mammoth Hot Springs is a large travertine terrace complex built up by hot-spring water depositing calcium carbonate, and its pools are colored by heat-loving bacteria and algae. The terraces have shifted and dried over the decades, so views like this record formations that no longer look the same today.
