Boat landing at Oceanic, Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire, circa 1902

About this postcard

The view looks across landscaped grounds with curving gravel paths, flower beds and a lamp post toward a stone pier where a white excursion steamer with red trim lies docked; a small red boathouse and a low tree stand at the water's edge, with the low, grassy islands of the Shoals stretching across the horizon. The card names the spot as the boat landing at Oceanic, the landing serving the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island, long a summer resort destination among the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. The imprint dates the view to 1902, when excursion steamers carried summer visitors out to the islands from Portsmouth and the mainland.
