About this postcard

The Boston City Hospital complex in the South End, viewed from the street: a domed administration building with a columned portico at the center, flanked by long red-brick pavilion wings under mansard roofs. A fenced lawn with young trees and a lamp post separates the buildings from the broad dirt roadway in the foreground. The hospital opened in 1864 and was laid out on the pavilion plan, with separate ward buildings spread across the grounds so that patients got light and fresh air. The sender, Frank, reported having "a immense time up here" and sent "kindest regards."
