View across the water toward Boston Light, the white conical tower and keeper's dwellings on the rocky tip of Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor. The station is the oldest lighthouse site in the United States, first established in 1716; the tower shown here dates from the 1783 rebuilding. By the time of this card, the light had guarded the entrance to Boston Harbor for more than 200 years, guiding ships into and out of the busy port. Fog signal building, oil house, and keeper's quarters cluster around the tower on the bare granite ledges.
