About this postcard

The Boston Manufacturing Company's mill complex in Waltham, Massachusetts, viewed across its mill pond: a long multi-story brick mill with rows of windows stands behind a wooden outbuilding and a stone retaining wall, with the dam and water in the foreground. Three figures on the grassy bank at lower right give a sense of the scale of the works. Founded in 1813, the Boston Manufacturing Company was one of the early American mills to bring cotton spinning and weaving together in one plant, and its Waltham works helped establish the town as a textile center. The pond and dam in the view point to the waterpower that drove the machinery.
