About this postcard
The sepia image shows Botticelli's Adoration of the Magi: the Holy Family at the center of a ruined classical structure, with the Magi and their attendants kneeling and crowding in from both sides. Horses and camels fill the background, turning the biblical episode into a busy courtly procession. Botticelli painted the scene in Renaissance Florence, setting the Nativity among antique ruins and a rich retinue. The version reproduced here is the one in the National Gallery of Art's Mellon Collection, a founding gift that shaped the Washington museum's holdings.
