Boulder Rock, Kaaterskill Park, NY, circa 1915

About this postcard

A massive boulder of horizontally bedded rock, streaked with moss and lichen, dominates the view. A figure in white stands in a shallow niche at its base, and a man in a dark coat and light trousers stands on the stone path beside it. Beyond the trees, a long white hotel with twin roof pavilions sits on the ridge, and blue mountain profiles fill the horizon. The hotel is the Kaaterskill Hotel, one of the large summer resort hotels of the northern Catskills, drawing guests to Kaaterskill Park in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rock formations and overlooks like Boulder Rock were standard stops on carriage and walking tours of the Catskill Mountain region.
