Boy driving two turkeys, Thanksgiving, Fall River, MA, 1908

About this postcard

A boy in a red plaid cap, polka-dot blouse, red neckerchief, and dark striped knickerbockers walks a dirt path with a switch in hand, driving two large bronze turkeys ahead of him. Bare trees and a green field fill the background. The scene draws on a common early 20th-century Thanksgiving postcard formula: the holiday's table bird paired with a rural child and a harvest-season landscape. Thanksgiving greetings were a steady holiday card genre in the years before World War I, though never as large a market as Christmas.
