About this postcard

Waltham's armory is a red-brick building with a long gabled drill hall extending behind a taller, castle-like front block. Two American flags fly from poles on the roof, and a horse-drawn carriage with a covered top stands on the road beside the lawn. Armories of this type served both military and civic purposes, with a large drill hall for militia or National Guard exercises and front rooms for meetings and social events. Waltham was a busy manufacturing city in the 1910s, and the building's castellated front gave the local company a formal public face. The carriage in the street reflects a moment when horse-drawn and motor traffic still shared the road.
