About this postcard
A two-story brick market house dominates the view, its gable end facing the square with a semicircular fanlight in the pediment, two tiers of tall arched openings, and a square bell cupola topped by a weathervane. Below, canvas awnings shelter rows of market stalls while horse-drawn wagons and carts crowd the open ground in front. Buildings of this type served as combined municipal market halls and public gathering places in American towns and cities through the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the bell used to mark market hours and sound alarms.
