A steel bridge spans the Columbia River at Cascade Locks, with steep basalt cliffs and boulders in the water below. The Bridge of the Gods opened in 1926, replacing a ferry at the crossing and taking its name from the landslide that once dammed the river. The crossing sits in the Columbia River Gorge, where the river cuts through basalt walls on both sides.
