Broadway crowded with pedestrians, New York, circa 1910

Card type
Printed photo

About this postcard

An elevated view along Broadway in New York City, where a dense mass of pedestrians in dark coats and hats fills the roadway and sidewalks. A building with a reddish awning frames the left side, and a large pale facade rises behind the crowd. The printed caption calls Broadway the most famous street in the United States, running eleven miles from the Battery to the northern part of the city, lined with business houses and large hotels and busy from morning until night. By the time this card was printed, Broadway was the spine of the city's commercial life, with offices and department stores downtown, the theater district farther uptown, and a steady flow of shoppers, clerks, and travelers. The view catches that everyday bustle rather than a single event.
