About this postcard
A bird's-eye view looks down the deck of the Brooklyn Bridge toward its two granite towers, with pedestrians, trolley cars, and wagons sharing the roadway and suspension cables fanning out overhead. A side-wheel ferry and a schooner work the East River below, and the dense Brooklyn waterfront, including a building advertising "Herald's Cocoa," fills the far shore. Completed in 1883 to John A. Roebling's design, the bridge was then the longest suspension span in the world and quickly became one of New York's most photographed landmarks. The scene catches the bridge as a working thoroughfare, with river traffic and waterfront commerce in plain view.
