About this postcard
A tinted street view looking along Buchanan Street, Glasgow, with tall Victorian commercial buildings on both sides, an ornate cast-iron street lamp, shop windows at ground level, and pedestrians in Edwardian dress sharing the roadway with horse-drawn vans and cabs. Buchanan Street was laid out in the 1770s as a residential street and by the late 19th century had become one of Glasgow's principal shopping thoroughfares, lined with the sandstone warehouses and emporia seen here. Tram rails run down the centre of the setts, reflecting the city's extensive horse and later electric tram network.
