About this postcard
A tall central jet rises from Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, with side sprays arcing into the wide basin. A low fence and a few small figures stand at the pool's edge, with lawn and open parkland beyond. Kate Buckingham gave the fountain to the city in memory of her brother Clarence, and it was dedicated in 1927 at the head of Congress Street, then Chicago's formal gateway between the downtown and the lakefront. The caption points out its debt to the Latona Fountain at Versailles, and the fountain's rococo sculpture and formal axis made it a common subject for view cards of the period.
