A row of storefronts with green awnings and a tall red-brick chimney fills the view at Buckingham's shopping centre, with several cars parked in front. The complex combined a shopping centre, post office, and theatre for a planned Arlington County community of about 2,000 families. Buckingham was developed as a garden-apartment neighborhood, and its center gave residents a local place to shop, mail letters, and see a movie. The community was laid out with grassy terraces, trees, and flowers, and promoted as about 12 minutes from the White House.
