About this postcard

A Black woman and three children stand in a rural yard while their log cabin burns behind them, sending heavy black smoke into the sky. Household belongings lie scattered on the red dirt. The woman clasps her hands; a small outbuilding and bare trees stand in the background. Open fires and cook stoves made rural cabins vulnerable. Coal oil was used to start fires and light lamps, and a burning home was a frequent tragedy when there was no running water and no one nearby to help. A family could lose everything. Queena Stovall, a Virginia folk artist, painted the scene, which is titled "Lawdy, Lawdy, What'll I Do?"
