About this postcard
A market-morning crowd fills Broad Street in Augusta, Georgia. Horse- and mule-drawn wagons and carts loaded with produce and barrels line the wide dirt street, while pedestrians move among them under large shade trees. Multi-story brick storefronts with awnings and a cast-iron balcony stand along the right side, and trolley poles and utility lines recede into the distance. Broad Street was Augusta's commercial spine in the early 1900s, and scenes like this show horse-drawn trade sharing downtown blocks with trolley infrastructure. The produce wagons suggest farmers and vendors bringing goods into the city from the surrounding Georgia and South Carolina countryside.
