A dark-winged buzzard (turkey vulture) descends with wings spread over the sandy floor of a desert landscape, where a bleached animal carcass lies among clumps of yucca, sagebrush and yellow-flowering shrubs. The printed caption calls it the "Buzzard Scavenger of The Ole Southwest," a title typical of mid-century scenic views of the American desert Southwest. Turkey vultures are the region's best-known soaring scavengers, locating carrion largely by smell.
