Buzzard scavenger of the Ole Southwest, desert scene, circa 1940

About this postcard

A dark-winged vulture descends toward the sandy floor of a desert scene, wings spread, while a bleached animal carcass lies among yucca, sagebrush, and low yellow-flowering shrubs. The caption calls it the "Buzzard Scavenger of The Ole Southwest," using the colloquial name for a turkey vulture. Turkey vultures are familiar soaring scavengers in the Southwest, riding thermals and locating carrion largely by smell. The open ground and scrubby plants place the scene in the dry interior Southwest.
