About this postcard

A stainless-steel California Zephyr, diesel locomotive at the head, curves along a river through a broad mountain valley. Green meadows and forested slopes rise toward snow-capped peaks under a clear sky, with a reddish rock outcrop at the right. The caption promotes the train's five Vista-Dome cars and its daily run between Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City and San Francisco over the Burlington, Rio Grande and Western Pacific, billing it as "the Scenic Way Across America." The Zephyr began service in 1949 as a joint venture of those three railroads, and its glass-roofed domes were built for the canyon and mountain scenery of the Colorado Rockies and the Feather River Canyon.
