A view along the west side of Canal Street in New Orleans, with open trolley cars of the Canal line running on tracks in the broad roadway while pedestrians, horse-drawn wagons, and a mule cart share the street. Commercial blocks line the avenue, their signs advertising businesses such as a tailor and a piano dealer, and electric wires crisscross overhead. Canal Street, the wide neutral ground that separated the French Quarter from the American sector, was the city's principal shopping and streetcar thoroughfare in the early 1900s.
Wide white margin at right carrying the printed caption and copyright line; handwritten inscription in the margin ("from Orls Dec 4 1905"); black-and-white photographic printing.
Postmark: AMESBURY MASS. DEC 13 AM 1905. Undivided back ("This side for the Address."), red "POST CARD" heading, Rotograph Co. imprint with "(Germany.)"; light wear and slight soiling at edges.
