About this postcard
A large Civil War-era naval cannon mounted on a stone base in Lake Front Park, flanked by pyramids of stacked cannonballs, with shade trees, park benches, and frame houses behind. The printed caption identifies the gun as having served aboard the U.S.S. Marion during the Civil War and notes it was given by the government, via the Brooklyn Navy Yard, to the Grand Army of the Republic post of St. Joseph in 1897. Such memorial guns were common features of G.A.R. posts and small-town parks in the decades after the war.
