About this postcard

The Canoe Club in Waltham, Massachusetts, stands as a large brick clubhouse with a gambrel roof, arched openings, a balcony lined with flower boxes, and a broad stairway leading up from the lawn. A dirt road runs past the front, and trees and a flagpole frame the left side under a soft sunset sky. Canoe clubs were popular social and athletic institutions along the Charles River in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a clubhouse like this served members for boating and gatherings. Its resort-like details suggest a place built for leisure as much as for sport.
