About this postcard

A broad, calm stretch of the Charles River at Waltham is crowded with canoes carrying men and women in early-1900s dress. A large crowd lines the tree-covered far bank under a cloudy sky. The number of boats suggests a busy summer outing or riverside gathering. Canoeing was a popular leisure pastime on the Charles in this period, when riverfront towns like Waltham drew residents and visitors to the water.
