About this postcard

A dense flotilla of canoes and small boats, crowded with paddlers, fills the Charles River at Waltham, Massachusetts. Most occupants wear light shirts and straw hats, and a wooded riverbank rises behind them under a pale sky. The packed water suggests a summer outing or river regatta. Canoeing and small-boat excursions were popular summer recreation on the Charles River in the early 1900s. Waltham was a manufacturing city known for watches and textiles, and its stretch of the river drew local residents to the water.
