Cantilever Bridge on the White Pass & Yukon Route, Alaska, circa 1910

About this postcard

A White Pass & Yukon Route train, headed by steam locomotives with freight cars trailing, crosses a steel cantilever truss bridge spanning a rocky gorge, with barren mountains rising behind. The bridge was erected in 1901 to carry the narrow-gauge line over the canyon of the Skagway River on its climb from Skagway toward Whitehorse, a route built during the Klondike gold rush era. The structure served until it was bypassed by a tunnel in 1969.
