Capitol and Arch (Winter Scene), Hartford, CT, 1906

About this postcard

A snow-covered view in Hartford's Bushnell Park, with the brownstone Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch at left and the Connecticut State Capitol at right. The arch's twin towers and the Capitol's gold-leaf dome rise above bare trees, and a curving pond or canal cuts through the foreground under a pink and yellow sunset sky. The arch, designed by George Keller and dedicated in 1886, honors Connecticut's Civil War dead. The Capitol, designed by Richard Upjohn and completed in 1878, is the seat of state government. The winter setting leaves the civic landmarks quiet under snow.
