About this postcard
The photograph shows the Captain John Smith monument from behind: a bronze figure on a light granite pedestal, with bare trees and a brick building at the left. The pedestal carries Smith's coat of arms and an inscription identifying him as governor of Virginia in 1608. The monument was erected on Jamestown Island in 1907, the 300th anniversary of the colony's founding, and presented to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bryan. Smith led the Jamestown colony and, by the traditional story, was saved from execution by Pocahontas.
