About this postcard

A bronze figure of Captain John Smith stands atop a light granite pedestal, seen from behind, with bare trees and a brick structure at left. The pedestal carries a carved coat of arms and the inscription naming him Governor of Virginia, 1608. This statue, sculpted by William Couper, was erected in 1907 at Jamestown to mark the 300th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in America; Smith famously led the colony and was saved, by tradition, by Pocahontas.
