About this postcard
Carey Square in Chelsea, Massachusetts, opens where a curving street with trolley tracks meets a three-story brick commercial block. Red-and-white striped awnings shade the storefronts, and a horse-drawn wagon and a few pedestrians occupy the roadway. Frame houses and bare street trees stand to the right, with a low hill beyond. Overhead trolley wires and a street lamp on a mast arm mark the square as a busy early 20th-century crossroads in an industrial city on the Mystic River opposite Boston.
