About this postcard
A single-story red-brick elementary school with a low-pitched roof, banks of ribbon windows, and a projecting entrance wing stands across a curving asphalt drive. The drive loops around a small island with a flagpole flying the American flag, and lawns and a wooded hillside fill the background. The long, low plan with continuous classroom windows is typical of American school construction in the 1950s and 1960s, when growing suburban districts built sprawling one-story campuses on large landscaped lots. The school honors Carl B. Hutcherson, the first Negro member of the Lynchburg School Board, and was completed in March 1959.
