The dark mouth of Carlsbad Caverns opens in a rocky hillside dotted with green scrub. A few visitors on the path at lower right give a sense of scale. The caption calls this the only natural opening to the cave and repeats the origin story of cowboy Jim White seeing bats stream out in black clouds at dusk.
By the 1930s, Carlsbad Caverns was a national park and a stop for motor tourists crossing southern New Mexico. The cave's evening bat flight and vast underground chambers made it a popular southwestern attraction.
