Carmelite Preparatory College and Church, Holy Hill, WI, circa 1915

About this postcard

A large brick church with twin towers and a smaller central spire crowns the hill, with the long brick college building stretching to the left below it. The complex sits on a ridge above the surrounding woods, and the church looks out over the rolling countryside. Holy Hill, in Washington County, Wisconsin, has drawn Catholic pilgrims since the mid-19th century. The Discalced Carmelites took charge of the shrine in 1906 and ran a preparatory college there, a school for boys considering religious life. The hilltop setting made the site both a place of devotion and a retreat from the surrounding farmland.
