About this postcard
A black-and-white photograph of a novelty mascot: a whitewashed log carved and painted to resemble a spotted dog, with a painted eye, dark ear, spiked collar, stubby legs and an upturned tail, standing in tall grass with a rope tied to it. The card's own caption identifies it as the mascot of the Mooselookmeguntic House at Haines Landing on Mooselookmeguntic Lake near Rangeley, Maine, a resort area in the western mountains that drew summer visitors for fishing and lake steamers in the early 20th century. Such carved-log animal figures were popular rustic novelty photo subjects at Maine lake resorts.
