Tall coconut palms and dense tropical foliage frame the Casa Blanca in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a curving road and wall in the foreground and other buildings beyond. The house was begun in 1521 for the family of Juan Ponce de León, who died before it was finished; his widow, Isabel de Bobadilla, is long associated with it. Over the centuries it served as a residence and later as a Spanish and then U.S. military headquarters in old San Juan.
