About this postcard
The view shows the long wooden Casino and Pleasure Pier reaching into the water at Newport News, Virginia. An open pavilion with a red roof and railings stands over the pier, with small sailboats moored alongside and a wooded shoreline with red-roofed buildings behind. In the early 1900s, "casino" usually meant a recreation pavilion rather than a gambling house, and pleasure piers with pavilions, bandstands, and bathhouses were common resort amenities around Hampton Roads. Newport News was then a growing railroad and shipbuilding town, and the pier gave residents and visitors a place to promenade over the water.
