About this postcard
The card shows the Castle Gate, a cluster of weathered granite hoodoos pierced by a natural opening, rising above the scrub-covered slope beside the road up Mount Lemmon north of Tucson. The formation sits in the Santa Catalina Mountains, reached by the Catalina Highway (also called the General Hitchcock Highway), a winding mountain road built in the 1930s that climbs from the desert floor to the pine forests of Mount Lemmon. The hand-colored look and ribbed stock are typical of mid-century linen postcards of Western scenery.
